Drighlington Youth Band

The Drighlington Youth Band is the oldest group (despite being made up of the youngest members) of the Drighlington family, originally founded in 1976 to provide young people from the Drighlington and surrounding areas the opportunity to learn to play Brass instruments.

Every Tuesday evening during term time, the Youth Band and Learners group, descend on the band room in Drighlington and enjoy an hour and a half of music making, social activities, forming friendships which will last them the rest of their lives way beyond the band.

Under the leadership of Mic Tyler, the Senior Bands Solo Euphonium player, the band work hard to improve their playing and try out a wide variety of styles of music.

After dwindling to almost nothing in the early part of the last decade, the band is now a growing group of enthusiastic young people, eager to reach the standards required where they could one day join the Senior Band. They are even back performing at Gala's, Garden Parties and Fetes during the summer months and regularly take part in various Christmas engagements during the Christmas period.

Training Programme

The Drighlington Band has always remembered and held in high regard its roots and continues to provide a dedicated training programme for young and old alike who would like the opportunity to learn to play a brass instrument. Still led by the bands' founder, Ken Crossland, it has seen 100's of young players come through its doors through its long history, many of whom are still involved in brass bands today.

Tuition can be given in small groups but usually on a one-to-one basis by a dedicated team of volunteers from the Senior Band and we are able to provide instruments, music and teaching resources to our members for the extremely competitive price of 50p (£0.50) per week! That is less than an entire terms tuition at school !

If you are interested in having a go at learning to play a brass instrument, why not get in touch? It's free to try and we will provide everything (including the instrument) to get you going!

Did You Know?

The Drighlington Youth Band were, during the 1980's a full contesting band in their own right? On occassions the Youth Band even competed head to head with the Senior Band at the same contests.
