From a small group of just six players the Youth Band grew over the coming years, winning contests and awards and providing an excellent community for young people to get together and enjoy music as well as prove an excellent nurturing tool for up and coming stars in the adult brass band world.
Regular trips abroad provided cultural awareness including tours of Italy and Germany.The Youth Band of today is somewhat smaller than the 60 or so members it supported through the mid 80's, but still provides invaluable support, community and tuition to young people from the surrounding area.
These days private music tuition is rapidly disappearing within the school system and we are doing our part to rectify this. For just a few pounds per year you can learn to play (see Tuition/Learners) a brass musical instrument with one-to-one tuition, loan instrument and music all provided. We are even looking to put together the means by which you can achieve your Music Board Grades which count towards future university entrance points (not a lot of people know that!)Most private tuition outside of brass bands is pretty expensive starting from approximately £15 per hour up to £30 or even £45 per hour, and you have to provide your own instrument. Here at Drighlington, and many other bands around the country, you can get quality tuition, the loan of an instrument and a whole set of new friends for about that amount PER YEAR!
